Adventure racing is an extreme sport that could be described as long-distance, cross-country team racing. We programmed a custom applet for an adventure racing tournament organizer who needed a way to analyze the waypoint information stored by a GPS (global positioning satellite) tracking receiver. Teams that take part in these races are required to carry a water-bottle shaped device that records their exact position (using GPS) every few seconds. Upon reaching each waypoint of the race, the GPS data is analyzed by a race official using a laptop in order to post average speeds, team rankings, top speeds, minutes spent resting (motionless), and more. This applet performed in-depth analysis of NMEA gps data recorded by custom hardware, and the output was rendered in HTML using a visual graph to illustrate the differences in teams race times. The generated reports can be used both for printing the race results on-site as well as posting the results live on a web-site during the race.
